The case of the Slovakian vase.

Photobucket

Memories of our pre-children, pre-high gas priced vacations are remembered whenever I see this vase pitcher. It's a good case that small things sometimes make all the difference. Admittedly, it's also a bit about old fashioned good fortune. In the late 90's, Craig and I took a trip to Prague and Vienna, making a train side trip over to Bratislava, Slovakia. It was a very exciting vacation, cold vacation, and one of my most memorable. On our way back to Vienna, we stopped in a store that sold those wonderful souvenirs for tourists that was more boutique than tourist shop. We purchased a small pitcher vase that sat on a matching plate with the same green and white designs shown in the vase above. It was one of our favorite souvenirs as it reminded us of our very fun vacation.

Fast forward to 2002, my brother came to live with us. He was helping us in the kitchen when he accidentally pushed the vase off the counter onto the floor. I'm not sure how I reacted but I remember being slightly irked that he wasn't being more careful. I was very disappointed that it was no longer that cherished souvenir we had enjoyed selecting and bringing home. Shortly after this episode, I found myself inside a local second hand store purusing the dish and glass section. I stopped suddenly and my eyes focused in on one white and green floral pitcher sitting in plain sight amongst a few other glass items. It was exactly like the vase that was now broken, and to my great astonishment it was indeed made by the same company and stamped with the Slovakian stamp. It was an enormous feeling of good fortune during a very difficult time in our lives. It now is prominately displayed in our home and a happy replacement to the orginal. Sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference.

Anything like this happen to you?
Have you had any plain good fortune lately?

OMMPD (one mommy moment per day): After getting into the car after school yesterday, Cici began talking to me about something that happened to her at school. I could tell that it wasn't a truly bad experience, but that it could have been if she hadn't of "let it out" and talked about it. I asked her questions about it and how the situation made her feel. After much discussion, she said to me "mommy, I'm glad I told you". Ahhh, music to my ears!

Have you recorded your mommy moment for today?

Michelle, I can't believe that you found a duplicate to your beloved vase in a thrift store! Truly, what are the odds! It was just meant for you to have that vase.

We were the recipent of good fortune when we found our dog Jake at the pound 2 1/2 years ago. We were not originally "animal" people but this was just meant to be. He has turned out to be the most perfect, amazing, loving dog. We can't imagine life without him!

"I'm so glad I told you." How wonderful! Such a great trust-building moment for her. I'm sure she will remember this positive moment when she has something else she needs to get off her chest and feel confident in coming to you with it.

What a wonderful, positive story and history of your special vase. If it could talk I wonder what story it would tell. I am happy that you have this replacement vase which brings you happiness.

We have many things in our home that we can look at and bring us so much joy. We have hand made gifts that we cherish, paintings that have a story behind them and of course photos and prints of precious times displayed throughout our home.

Lots of love
Elise
