SPT - Childhood Memories: It was all about the hair!

First day of Kindergarten

My mom was very passionate about my hair, perhaps every mom is just as passionate as she was? As most of you that read my blog know, I was adopted at the age of 3. Let's just say, I could have been labeled a ragamuffin, and my hair was not my most flattering feature.

The ringlets! Family photo 1977.

And so, when my mom finally got a hold of my hair it was curlers and ringlets for me. Every Saturday night I had to sleep in those soft pink curlers and wake up to a sunday morning primping session. I was not aloud to comb my hair, however, I was known to sneak off and comb out my ringlets, probably just for spite!

When school came around it was chop chop for me. I was devastated to have my hair cut, but looking back - I was pretty cute.

3rd grade school photo.

Somehow I must have convinced my mum that it was time to grow out my hair. By 2nd and 3rd grade I was adamant that my hair look just like my sisters and she always wore hers long and straight.

5th grade photo.

Until the day of the perm - AHHHH! It was popular back in the 80's where I grew up to get your hair permed. This is my 5th grade picture and by far my most flattering hair style - don't you think???!!!

Camp (1989-I think!) Charity (top), ?, than me, Sydney (sidebar), Heather, and Heather (bottom; aka Heffalump)

And this is where my natural hair became questionable. My parents were pretty strict, but when it came to hair they were "whatever you want to do". Charity, who's known me since I was 6, can vouch for my many choices in hair color. Red, brunette, ash blonde, and blonde, blonde, blonde. I think I was going for the sulky brooding look with this all bangs style of hair.

Cheer leading photo 1990

My senior year up until shortly after I got married, it was curls and ratting. How high can bangs go? Fortunately, my hair was is so fine that you really can't get it that high. I was very proud of this year though, I had always wanted to try out for the cheer leading squad. However, being a bit of geek and having the courage of an ant; I didn't try out until my senior year. It was so much fun! My hair color this year was pretty stable to shades of blonde.
But the true question is: What is my natural hair color? I really have no idea! After a summer of swimming - I know it wasn't orange. My blonde hair had turned a nice shade of yellowish orange.

This is my new hair shade. Perhaps it matches more to my natural color - I guess only time will tell. I thought of Donna when I did this, and of course - light browns have more fun!

Fess up - do you dye your hair?
What was your worst hair style in school?
How high can you get your bangs?

distance: Friday, 3 miles; Monday, 3 miles

I love this SPT! I'm so glad you shared so many photos. It was fun to watch you grow up.

I had my first perm in grade 5 too.

No, I don't dye my hair. I did highlights once when I graduated from Dental Hygiene but the $50 pricetage prevented me from ever doing them again. I am just not willing to spend that kind of cash on my head, when I know I'll put it in a braid anyway!

That was a blast to look at all those pictures. I have a similar thing- it's all about the hair. For about 10 years-jr high, high school, college- it was straight, long and I had never dyed it (before that time I was on the same perm/bang bandwagon of the 80s). Then after I got married and started having babies I found the only thing I could control was my hair. It's been MANY different styles in the past 10 years. I get bored and am not afraid to go for it anymore. Right now I'm trying to grow it out. BORING!
I'm so glad you got your good mail- I was wondering how long it would take to get from me to you.
You have taught ME about friendship. I only wish you still lived in So Cal so we could actually get together. For now, blogging and good mail will have to do.
Have a fabulous day!

Great post! My junior high hair was the WORST hair phase I ever went through - stiff hairsprayed bangs and all!

I don't dye my hair. I had it highlighted twice when Luci was a baby and decided I like it better naturally.

Oh goodness in this post. LOVE the flashbacks, and the 5th grade double exposure pic. Such fun to look back

If I ever get my scanner dusted off adn hooked back up I will promise to do a DuranDuran inspired post with my big hair! :)

Now today, do I color my hair? OH YES! Someday I will embrace my grey but not yet. I always admire the women with the sparkly grey hair and a cute cut-- will be there someday.

Bangs-- ugh. Even my college sorority girl photo has bangs, sad to say. Surefire way to ruin a cute bob haircut-- add curled under bangs. Shudder to even look at that darn pic that I loved so much at one time. So misguided. lol...

Hee Hee....your much bravier than I. I will go down before ever showing ANYONE one a picture of me in my hair perming days. There are 2 things I will never do again-cut my hair real short or perm my hair. To make matters worse I think those were the days I discovered 'Sun-In'. Not the most attractive time in my life-in fact I doubt you would even recognize me!

I love that you would comb your curls out of spite. I am constantly telling Taylor NO BRUSHING when I do that with her hair.

I had a perm similar to yours in 4th grade I HATED it!

You hair looks so great. Yes, I do color mine 2 times a year. I didn't get much height on my bangs because my hair never took hairspray. But I had what they called a "roll" it was hideous :)

I have to say I have never colored or dyied my hair! I am too scared. I had the high bangs also for a year. I totaly had to sleep in those pink curlers also. My mom went to beauty school and did hair so she was always experimenting on us. So not a good thing. Even my brothers got perms!!

What a great time table of pictures! Your hair evolution is brilliant! I must say it's come a long ways! I am loving your new hair color! I have dark brown hair (I think) but I put a box dye on it when it starts looking faded and dull! I have colored my hair since I was 16 and dyed it jet black! My poor mom!

I'm in awe of your mum that she had time to primp your hair each morning. Erin's lucky if I get to drag a baby brush through her bob!

I usually dye my hair, but at the moment I'm as grey as a badger due to lack of 'me time'. I used to dye it black, then let it grow out and discovered to my horror that it had been going grey behind the scenes, so I had it cut into an Uma Thurman 'Pulp Fiction' bob, and dyed it brown - but then having children resulted in my hair collapsing to the bottom of my priorities and it is a TOTAL MESS now.

You look gorgeous with the light brown hair, your eyes are really enhanced by the darker color. Darker is good for fall, anyway, I think.
I've never colored my hair, and with the greys starting to come in I'm very nervous to start! Having said that, I'm actually glad I've kept my natural color all these years, because I've got plenty of years ahead of me for salon color!

I found your blog on a link from Heffalump's blog. What a trip to see that picture from camp. It took me a minute to recognize everyone. I don't know if you remember me, I'm Heidi K from Walnut Grove ward or the Columbia YA branch. I'm glad to see you're doing well and you look absolutely gorgeous!! I hope you don't mind that I sneaked in and found you.

Boy can I relate to this. I used to have to wear those pink sponge rollers too! I had horrible hair because my mom didn't really know how to do it and neither did I. So I always had bad perms- no horrible perms. I cringe when I see those school pictures.
As of now- I do color my hair- mostly becasue I am already going gray! yikes.
