I am a firm believer that luck is far overrated! I believe there are things that bring us comfort in times of high stress, such as a necklace given by a grandmother, a watch by a father, or a book by a friend. If we prepare for whatever event we are participating in and we have the confidence to execute - we will succeed.
For Self Portrait Tuesday, I have chosen to post about my Comfort Charm. My mother inherited her family's old baby grand piano. As a little girl, I would sit down with the old Thompson series books ( all with fingering added) and play the songs in the book. My favorite song was The Swan Song! The piano soon became the instrument of my feelings. It allowed me to express myself; even when angry, whenever I felt like it. It gave me strength and confidence, because I knew I could at least do one thing well.
Today, the piano continues to be my gateway to peace. I have a Clavinova, which allows me to play the piano when the girls are asleep. When Craig is traveling, I'll spend hours in the evening composing and playing. The piano is my Comfort Charm!

I play the piano, but it is my 13 year old daughter that would relate to your feelings about playing being a comfort charm. She connects with music in a way I'm slightly envious of. She wanders over to the piano even when she doesn't 'have to practise' and sits down to play. The piece she chooses is a good barometer of her mood.
piano player here (along with several wind insturments.) i am lucky enough to have a gorgeous parlor grand in my house, which i don't play nearly as often as i should!!
i would say that bach and mozart are my favorite classical composers. john williams and david foster come to mind as contemporary composers.
i honestly don't think i could live without music. it is a HUGE part of my life, whether i'm playing or listening.
(ah, the Thompson series... good times.)
I have never heard of a Clavinova..will have to google that! I love your word transformation of luck to comfort...I so agree with your thoughts on the subject!
I am also a lover of the piano and the comfort familiar beautiful music brings. thanks for visiting my blog today, your girls are beautiful and I wish you luck as you continue your adoption journey. please keep in touch!
What a comfort! I can just plunk out stuff with my right hand. I played the harp all growing up but I shared it with my sisters so I don't have one now.
Oh, I love your pick for SPT! Music is wonderful, and should be such a part of every life...comfort charm...I love that too!
That is one talent I wish I had. I would LOVE to learn how to play the piano. Unfortunately my family growing up didn't have anything to do with music. That is a great comfort charm to have!
I wanted to comment on this yesterday, but Isla woke up crying! All I wanted to say was, I don't play any instruments (written music is like a secret code to me!) but I love classical music. I have Classic FM Radio on in the car all the time, so Erin and Isla are probably unconsciously soaking it all up on the school runs.
I love Michael Nyman's music too. I love 'The Heart Asks Pleasure First' from the film, The Piano. Can you play that? I'd be soooo impressed!
Elizabeth, I'm impressed you play the harp! I saw a full-size harp in the window of a house one day, as I drove past, and thought it was the ULTIMATE in window dressing!
Lelly - Both of those composer's are really talented - geniuses I would also add. I love the violin solo played by Isaak Pearlman from Schindler's List - absolutely beautiful! We move so much - that we having a large piano would be a big paiN! Thanks for your comments! Michelle
