General Conference - like the old days.

Back in the "old days", the only way our family could hear General Conference was to go to the church and sit in the pews for a session or all sessions. My dad wanted to insure a soft seat so we would always arrive an hour before the session started. That meant 8a.m.! We usually attended both days' sessions and would meet with friends to have a potluck style lunch in between the sessions. What was your general conference like? What age were you when your family switched to viewing it on the TV?

In the spirit of how it used to be, I took this bag and filled it with every reverent diversion I could think of to keep these little tigers busy. I made little books with pictures of temples, girls praying, church buildings etc..., wikki stixs, pens, books, play dough in Easter eggs, snacks and the list goes on, and on, and on...

How long do you think it took for them to go through my diversions?

....20 minutes! Yes, I had three hours and forty minutes to go and they had already looked at every book and played with every toy. It was crazy! My saving grace was my friend Kathy, who had purchased a set of smelly pens. Do you remember those? I used to love those as a little girl. My girls were fascinated by them and used them through the second Saturday session and the first Sunday session.

During Saturday conference, we walked to Subway for lunch with the missionaries and Kathy's family. On Sunday we had a potluck with everyone in our building. All said, I took notes and enjoyed the talks I could hear and concentrate on. What I learned most?...I thought I would be in the minority coming to church by myself with the girls; but I wasn't. We have several sisters with young children who's husband are not active. Yet they were their with their children -at every session. My heart was softened by their commitment.
Next time: Smelly pens and my husband!

Last week, I had a date with one of my daughters. She loves skirts! Lucky for me and my beginner sewing skills, I found a skirt pattern that consisted of a front and back, some elastic, and a hem. We cut and pinned and sewed this skirt on our date. She helped me by handing me pins and saying "This is the best day of my life"! It was so cute, and great for my mommy ego!

I took the skirt and did some embellishment on it - a heart sewn into the dress, some buttons, and a zig zag five layer hemline at the bottom!

Michelle, you are so cute. I love that you are sewing all the time. I want to...but it just doesn't happen. Actually I feel like nothing I want to do happens right now. All in good time, right? We enjoyed conference too. We got it at home this time. Nice. The kids didn't care so much, but I got to watch all 4 sessions. I've got some ideas brewing for Oct though for the kids. I think I switched to watching at home when I moved to Utah after my mission. We always want to the church in WA. :) Keep up the great blog!!

You are a brave soul to take two little girls to conference all by yourself. I grew up watching it like that too. It wasn't until I got to BYU that I watched it on tv. I've lived here since then so I'm pretty spoiled now.

That skirt is darling. I love mommy-ego boosting days. It helps me to keep going.

I am so glad that you where able to attend conference with your girls. I admire you taking them to both sessions. The skirt you made is adorable! You have such a knack for sewing, and adorable fabric!

hi there -- so glad i popped onto your blog from scribbit. you caught my attention when i read "I believe that everyone who shares their story can give hope and understanding to another" in your profile. i love it.

i am the only member in my nuclear family (my husband and our teen daughters are not). i chose to join our church 2 years ago (no regrets!!). now my husband is united in forcing our teens to go to sunday church with me and to go to mutual in the week also. it wasn't working to leave it up to them, they mostly said no not interested, so now we force. they are too young to know what is best for them. will see how that goes.

i loved getting to see and hear conference yesterday (i made daughter and daughter the younger listen to at least 2 hours total). i love getting to read them later when they are printed.

a year ago, while i was laid up for three weeks from a busted knee, my r.s. president and friend loaned me three years worth of conference CDs. i listened to them pretty much every day until about 1 pm. it was such a blessing to hear all those gems during that recovery time. we are soooo blessed to be in our church.

all things good to you and yours this day,

PS. i got a kick out of you naming your previous post "bend it like beckham." what a cute story.

I remember driving to Montana to watch conference on T.V. in a hotel, because we didn't get conference at home or at the stake centre in canada at the time!

I'm so glad to have it on T.V. now here in Alberta.
