SPT. The walls remember.

Our walls carry a more Euro-centric art theme. In 1998, Craig and I found it cheaper to fly to Europe from our home in Alexandria, VA than to fly to Washington State. We took advantage of the cheap flights and ended-up with great experiences and a piece of artwork from almost every place we visited.

Using this same method of collecting art wherever we've visited, we also purchased several pieces of artwork that symbolize our love of Alexandria, VA. In 1996, we packed up our old Ford Festiva with two trunks, a dog, our kitchen table, china, clothes and other essentials and traveled across country from Portland, OR to Virginia (see above photo) to work and finish Craig's schooling. We spent two weeks measuring how much we could fit in it, and everything else (accept two boxes of clothes) were sold. Unfortunately, every blind spot was blocked! My dad, ingenious as he can be, gave us two truck mirrors to attach to our car so we could at least see behind us! It was crazy. We felt like the hillbillies going to Washington! We moved in 2001 and still feel it is the one place we would want to live again. Here are a few things from Alexandria, VA and area that hang on our walls:
We purchased this artwork by Pat Palmerino which depicts an Alexandria (VA) Waterfront Festival.

Many a Saturday was spent at Mt. Vernon. Our favorite was the drive along the Potomac and Christmas at Mt. Vernon.
In the Mt. Vernon Stake Center hung a very large Prayer at Valley Forge, which Craig and I love! We couldn't purchase this when we lived there -it was a little over our budget! But, were excited when this picture became more widespread and popular with different sized prints. It made it a more affordable to purchase for our home.

This is the only other thing that is patriotic looking and represents America. I bought these last June at JoAnne's Fabric in Lancaster, CA.
I love that our walls are covered with the places and things we've seen. It helps me remember all the good times, especially when I'm down. We are excited to be going to DC again over the 4th to meet-up with old friends and go to the 4th of July fireworks - something we couldn't miss when we lived there (except the one time it was over a hundred with the same amount of humidity - we stayed home that day!)

You've got a lot of good stuff from your travels. I'm wondering how you feel about America now that you're living in Canada, that would be interesting.

The first year I lived out in DC I watched the fireworks from the carrillon just outside Arlington Cemetery and it was pretty miserable. I haven't seen the fireworks since!! Sad huh?! How fun that your girls will be able to experience a DC 4th. It's a must see!!!

My brother is living in Alexandria right now, we used to live in Kensington on the other side (right behind the temple).

Ah, good memories.

Those red and blue star baskets are VERY american. I dont' have anything like that at all. I love that the wood adds the white element for red, white, and blue.
