SPT - Happy, powerful, tolerable Orange.

Frank Sinatra said that "Orange is the happiest color". In the Native American culture orange means "kinship", and when used in therapy orange is supposed to energize, and stimulate appetite-hmm, maybe that's why I'm so hungry all the time! An old boss once said that "Orange means power" and insisted I wear orange logo shirts to the computer trade shows I had to attend. It was horrific for me, since as a blond, orange just doesn't look good. Fortunately, I will save everyone a picture, since I never took any in this awful business attire. Maybe now that I'm going darker with my hair, I might be able to pull off the only orange shirt I own.

Now, as I arise from a fitful slumber and walk downstairs for the mornings Captain Crunch Cereal, I am greeted each day to orange, with brown cupboards, and red accents. Our landlord is some famous hockey player, that seemed to like bold colors - which I am half grateful for, and half dread. Grateful, because I love color and would have hated to move into a house with all white walls, I've done that before - no thanks! Dread, because I'm having to overcome my orange phobia and my "live with" mentality - and enjoy finding ways to brighten my dark kitchen.

The first thing I did was add white curtains. We are lucky to have bright large windows, and I tried darker curtains, but it was a bit dreary when the sun decided not to shine for two months. The white curtains definitely have a brightening effect.

The second thing is I always try to have a decorative table cloth on the table, it seems to add a nice ambiance to the room and center showcase to the window that sits behind it. In the spring and summer when the light shines through the window more, I can strip the table cloth off and leave the bare wood. Although, I do enjoy a nice tablecloth.

The third thing was to add lots of art to the walls - some bright pictures and crafty pieces. I also like to use a lot of green, it seems to offset the dark colors well. I won't lie to you - it's still dark in my kitchen - but the window, table dressing, pictures, and greenery help. What are your decorative ideas for my kitchen? Don't be shy!
Are you finished with fall decorations?
Do you buy decor at after season sales?
Do you wear Orange?

You can't just say "some famous hockey player" without telling me who he is!

I love your kitchen too! I actually enjoy orange but am not brave enough to use it. My downstairs walls are kind of orangy-red so I guess I'm using it a little.

I agree with Justin. You cannot say, "some famous Hockey Player" in Canada and get away with it. Dish! We need details!

I love your white curtains. They make the room look cool and breezy.

I want to decorate with colour, but I am a chicken. What if I don't like it? I'd be out all the time and money and then be even MORE chicken to try something new.

I think you have made the best of an orange situation! Everything goes together very nicely--cozy and inviting.

It must be difficult if you're renting and you don't like the decor you've got. Hmmm...tricky.

I think you're white curtains are fab, and I too love tablecloths (but can't have them at the moment, as Isla would just pull them off with all the stuff ON the table too!).

How about you type in 'gorgeous orange kitchen' into Google images and see what inspirations it throws up? Or look at a colour wheel and see what combinations you could try out with the orange spectrum?? Or can you hang a huge mirror somewhere to 'double' the size of the window in its reflection?? I think you've made your home look lovely, anyway!
